Parents, we've posted a great Seasonal Flu Guide here!
Prescription medicine
The school is frequently asked to give internal medication to students during school hours. New York State Education Law and Health Practice Acts require certain procedures when circumstances necessitate giving internal medication to a child in school.
A written request from the family physician must accompany the medication. It should include:
Name of medication
Amount to be given
Time of day to be given
Length of time to be given (i.e. until end of school year)
A parent permission form must be signed.
The medication must be in the original container
Medication may be sent with teacher on field trips if the student is self-directed. A self-directed student is consistently able to do all of the following:
identify the correct medication
identify the purpose of the medication
determine the correct dosage is being administered (e.g. one pill)
identify the time the medication is needed during the school day
describe what will happen if medication is not taken
refuse to take medication, if the student has any concerns about its appropriateness
Medication requests must be renewed each school year. All medications must be brought to the school by a parent/guardian. Students may not carry any medications on their person.
Requests for students in middle and high school to carry their own inhalers during school hours or school sports participation must be approved in writing by the physician, the parent, and the school nurse.
We ask for your cooperation in this matter for the protection of all our students.
