Let's Keep Our Students Safe — Every Step of the Way
As we kick off a new school year, please help protect our students, staff, and families by following these important safety guidelines when driving in and around school campuses:
🚗 Slow Down & Stay Alert
Campus speed limit is 10 MPH.
Slowing down gives you more time to react — especially around children who may dart into the road.
Stay off your phone and keep your eyes on the road.
Distractions can wait — safety cannot.
🚶♀️ Watch for Pedestrians
Little ones can be hard to see and unpredictable.
Always be on the lookout near crosswalks and sidewalks.
It’s the law: Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.
If someone is ready to cross, you must stop — it’s not just courteous, it’s required.
Respect and obey crossing guards.
They’re working hard to protect everyone. A smile or wave goes a long way!
🚌 Be Extra Careful Around School Buses
Give buses plenty of space, especially when they’re stopped.
Buses may have large blind spots and can’t always see you.
Obey all flashing lights and stop signs on buses.
Flashing yellow lights mean slow down — red lights mean STOP. Never try to speed up or pass.
Passing a school bus is extremely dangerous — and illegal.
Children may be crossing the street unexpectedly. Stay back and wait until the bus moves on.
⚠️ Don't Take Risks
No speeding.
No passing when it’s unsafe.
No rushing through drop-off zones.
Let’s all do our part to make school arrival and dismissal safe for everyone. Safety is everyone’s responsibility — and every small action matters.
Sec. 1151 Pedestrians’ Right of Way in Crosswalks
(a)
When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk on the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, except that any pedestrian crossing a roadway at a point where a pedestrian tunnel or overpass has been provided shall yield the right of way to all vehicles.
(b)
No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impractical for the driver to yield.
(c)
Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.
