Let's Keep Our Students Safe — Every Step of the Way

As we kick off a new school year, please help protect our students, staff, and families by following these important safety guidelines when driving in and around school campuses:

🚗 Slow Down & Stay Alert

  • Campus speed limit is 10 MPH.

  • Slowing down gives you more time to react — especially around children who may dart into the road.

  • Stay off your phone and keep your eyes on the road.

  • Distractions can wait — safety cannot.

🚶‍♀️ Watch for Pedestrians

  • Little ones can be hard to see and unpredictable.

  • Always be on the lookout near crosswalks and sidewalks.

  • It’s the law: Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.

  • If someone is ready to cross, you must stop — it’s not just courteous, it’s required.

  • Respect and obey crossing guards.

  • They’re working hard to protect everyone. A smile or wave goes a long way!

🚌 Be Extra Careful Around School Buses

  • Give buses plenty of space, especially when they’re stopped.

  • Buses may have large blind spots and can’t always see you.

  • Obey all flashing lights and stop signs on buses.

  • Flashing yellow lights mean slow down — red lights mean STOP. Never try to speed up or pass.

  • Passing a school bus is extremely dangerous — and illegal.

  • Children may be crossing the street unexpectedly. Stay back and wait until the bus moves on.

⚠️ Don't Take Risks

  • No speeding.

  • No passing when it’s unsafe.

  • No rushing through drop-off zones.

Let’s all do our part to make school arrival and dismissal safe for everyone. Safety is everyone’s responsibility — and every small action matters.

Sec. 1151 Pedestrians’ Right of Way in Crosswalks

(a)

When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk on the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, except that any pedestrian crossing a roadway at a point where a pedestrian tunnel or overpass has been provided shall yield the right of way to all vehicles.

(b)

No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impractical for the driver to yield.

(c)

Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.
